The Fagan Coat Of Arms Story
Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Fagan family history parchment:
This small, but very distinguished sept came to Ireland with the Anglo-Norman invasion in the second half of the twelfth century. Their name is Norman, and is derived from the latin 'Paganus' meaning Countryman', and the family quickly established itself in the Counties of Dublin and Meath. By 1200, William Fagan held much property in the capital, and for several successive, generations in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, leading men of the family were Mayors and high Sheriffs of Dublin. Their seat was at Feltrion in County Dublin, but other branches of this family settled in Kerry and Cork City at an early date. It was eiht the latter branch that Christopher Fagan took refuge in 1407 after he had supported Perkin Wardeck, the unsuccessful pretender to the English throne. He was from the Kerry branch that the fagans who emigrated to France descended. After distinguishing themselves in the service of this country, they were ennobled: a Fagan de Beaulieu, Captain Commandant in 1785, appears in the lists of Irish brigades in France. Within Ireland, Fagans are still found almost exclusively in Leinster, and half of those are Dubliners. A small proportion is from County Louth, but there the name is variant of the name O'Hagan. Many of the family entered public service, but the two best-remembered Fagans were Robert, born in Cork in 1745, who became a diplomatic and portrait Painter, and James Fleming Fagan, of an emigrant family in America, who became a planter, soldier, and official: he died in 1893.
