The Griffin Coat Of Arms Story
Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Griffin family history parchment:
Some Griffins in Ireland are of foreign origin and stem from the Welsh immigrants who came in the wake of the Anglo-Norman invasion of 1179. There is also a small, rather an obscure group of O'Griffys south of the Kenmare river; a Gaelic place name, Ballygrifin, indicates their whereabouts. The majority of Irish Griffins trace their ancestry to the true Gaelic O’Griobhtha, a sept of Thomond. This influential sept, whose name in early English was rendered O'Greefa or O’Grifee, held a stony territory around Inchiquin in county Clare. Their stronghold was Ballygriffy castle near Dysart, and to this day the majority of Griffins and O'Griffys in Ireland come from the Munster counties of Clare, Limerick, Kerry, and Cork. Gerald Griffin came from the prominent O’Griffy family of Dysart- he is renowned for his great novel ‘The Collegians,’ which he wrote in the early part of the nineteenth century. In the previous century, Muiris O’Griofa was a Gaelic poet of some note, those of Welsh ancestry often have their surname Anglicised to Griffith. Eminent men of this stock, were Sir John Griffith, an outstanding nineteenth-century geologist, and politician, and Arthur Griffith, a prominent Irish leader of the early twentieth century. Of the Griffins who emigrated to the new world one, John Griffin, sailed on the 'Yorkshire,’ from Liverpool to New York on 27th October 1847. The fare at that time cine cost him less than £3!
